Host of the Event:
Zhou Jianjia
Event Theme:
Architectural theories developed at an accelerated speed during 18th to 20th century France, resulted from the debates regarding theory based on masonry construction and structural innovation types, especially concrete. Auguste Perret was a key figure in this transformation of architectural language. The forces of convention and invention can be found in Perret’s work. But the reading never ends here. If the current digital fabrication technologies are seen as another turnaround, then Perret and his time can be a reference for contemporary. The theme of this event starts from Perret’s precast concrete projects, in parallel with 3D concrete printing technologies. The speakers and guests for the roundtable open up new horizons in their understanding of the relationship between technology and society in Perret and his time, so as in our time.
Lecture Topic:
Early Mass-Produced Houses and Auguste Perret
Santiago Etien
Standard and Nonstandard Mass Production: Common Issues addressed by Perret’s Concrete Construction and 3D Concrete Printing
Shuyi HUANG

Jia Weng is an architectural designer, curator, and researcher. She is a Ph.D. candidate in architectural history and theory at Yale School of Architecture, who holds a certificate in Film and Media Studies. Situated at the intersection between architectural history and media studies, her dissertation examines the transformation between information and material forces through the control valve, a fluid-regulating device in architecture. Her research project won the Carter Manny Research Award by the Graham Foundation.
Xuan Luo
MIT
Ph. D. Candidate
Luo Xuan, PhD Candidate in History, Theory and Criticism of Architecture, MIT; MDes in History and Philosophy of Design, Harvard; BArch, The Cooper Union. In my current research, I explore the cultural and philosophical underpinnings of the unseen, juxtaposing the fascination with microbes from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century against the evolving narratives of architecture. This inquiry unveils select microcosmic entities as markers delineating the intersections of technology, aesthetics, and changing epistemologies across various disciplines.
